Retail energy suppliers are accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in restructured states by offering innovative and cost-effective energy solutions that align with consumer needs for convenience, sustainability, and affordability.
Consumers often face a range of barriers to the adoption of electric vehicles. High installation costs for the charger and inconsistent public charger pricing are frequently the reasons customers cite when electing to go with non-electric alternatives.
If a consumer is located in a monopoly energy state, they could also see higher home energy bills if they don’t have an option to switch to a plan that works for them. In restructured states, suppliers are offering different plans explicitly for EVs that address some of the most common barriers faced by consumers:
- Clearview Energy – ClearChange Plan
- Clearview has partnered with leading home charging equipment companies such as ChargePoint, JuiceBox, and Wallbox. This partnership provides customers with free home electric charging at night and rebates on charging equipment, representing over 95% of the market for home chargers. - IGS – Go Green™ 36-Month Fixed Rate Electricity
- Through this program, IGS partnered with Smart Columbus to provide electric vehicle buyers in Central Ohio with a $750 value towards the installation of their charging equipment once they sign up for IGS’s 36-month Go Green™ fixed-rate electricity product. - TXU Energy (Vistra) – Free EV Miles
- TXU Energy has partnered with Ford Motor Company to launch a new energy program for Ford’s electric SUV and truck owners in Texas. Through this program, participating Ford EV customers will receive a credit on their TXU Energy bill for all electricity used to charge their EVs during the free off-peak hours, which run from 7 p.m. to 1 p.m. the following day, year-round. The examples above represent only a few of the offerings available to customers. Using your state’s energy shopping website, you can search to see all offers available to you.
These examples also underscore how retail energy providers currently support the adoption of EVs while enhancing the overall consumer experience by offering tailored energy solutions that make EV ownership more accessible and financially viable.
“By supporting retail energy solutions and maintaining a competitive market, states can accelerate EV adoption, drive innovation, and achieve environmental goals more efficiently and sustainably,” said Abby Foster, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy at the Retail Energy Advancement League.
The Retail Energy Advancement League (REAL) is a national advocacy organization dedicated to the expansion and modernization of American retail energy markets. In many states, utility monopolies still control the electric market and customers can’t choose where they buy their electricity and gas.
